Origin: English
Meaning: The name is derived from the Old French world aimée ‘beloved’ and also from the Old French word Amata ‘to love’. Became popular in England after the shocking death of Amy Robsart, the wife of Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester in 1560. In fell from favour for a few centuries but came to light once more in Victorian times. It had great popularity in the 1970’s, perhaps due to President Carter’s young daughter.
