Meaning: "Of a man" In the bible, Andrew was St Peter’s original name, and St Andrew the Apostle, who was the brother of the apostle Simon Peter and so beloved by the Russians, was crucified on a cross in the shape of an X at Patras, Greece in about 60AD.He is the patron saint of Scotland, Russia, and Greece. This was also the name of kings of Hungary. The name has always been a favourite with the Russians and there have been many forms. The Scots also like Andrew. St Andrew is their patron saint. There was also an Italian St Andrew (Corsini), who lived in Florence in the fourteenth century. And lastly there was a Polish, St Andrew, who lived in the seventeenth century. So Andrew does have worldwide appeal. The great peak of Andrew’s popularity seems to have passed, but it is still found frequently and is now becoming a well-used second name.
