Meaning: Anna is the Latinised form of the name, Hannah. It appears briefly in the New Testament belonging to a prophetess who recognised Jesus as the Messiah. It was also borne by an 18th-century empress of Russia and by the main character in Tolstoy's 'Anna Karenina', a woman forced to choose between her son and her lover.
