What’s In A Name – Buffy Anne Summers
Buffy –
Origin: Pet name for Elizabeth (From Elisabet, the Greek form of the Hebrew name Elisheba)
Meaning: 'Elizabeth' From the Greek name Elisabet, (a form of the Hebrew name Elisheba) meaning "my God is an oath" or perhaps "my God is abundance". In the New Testament this is the name of the mother of John the Baptist. It was also borne by the 12th-century Saint Elizabeth, a daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary who became a Franciscan nun and lived in poverty. It was also the name of a ruling queen of England and an empress of Russia. Famous modern bearers include the British queen Elizabeth II and actress Elizabeth Taylor.
Anne –
Origin: Hebrew / Western form of Hannah.
Meaning: ‘grace’. This was supposed to have been the name of the virgin Mary’s mother. It was a favourite name in Russia during the Middle Ages and when Princess Anne of Russia married King Henry I of France in 1051 it was carried to Europe. The Latinised form Anna became popular in eighteenth-century England. During Victorian times Annie was a favourite version of the name, but Ann was always used and after the birth of Princess Anne in 1950, Anne became the favourite. Since the late 1960’s Ann and Ann are more frequently used second names than first names but Anna, Anita, Annette, Anika, Nancy – all many forms of the name – are found frequently today.
