Daniel (Danny) –
Origin: From the Hebrew name Daniyel - Danny is the diminutive of Daniel.
Meaning: ‘God is my judge’ or ‘God has Judged’. Daniel was a Hebrew prophet whose story is told in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. He lived during the Jewish captivity in Babylon, where he served in the court of the king, rising to prominence by interpreting the king's dreams. The book also presents Daniel's four visions of the end of the world. The name was found in England before the Norman conquest, but only as a name for monks. It was common in the Middle Ages and was revived again in the seventeenth century. It was popular in the eighteenth century – Daniel Defoe (d. 1731), the political novelist, wrote Robinson Crusoe. Given frequently in the nineteenth century, it died away in the early twentieth century. However, it came back in the 1960’s and is found frequently, both as a first and second name. Daniel, Prince of Montenegro, was assassinated in 1860.
